ONLINE MAPPING SERVICES (WIGLE, .KISMAC, GOOGLE EARTH)

So far, you've seen that the most reliable way to generate maps from war driving is with StumbVerter. Unfortunately, StumbVerter requires Microsoft MapPoint (and also Windows). Instead of bringing the maps to your wardriving data at home, many people would rather send the wardriving data to the maps.

The basic idea is that you upload your wardriving data to a server of some sort, and it, in turn, generates a map of the location for your use. One big advantage to this approach is that you can share your wardriving information with everyone else, making for a bigger database. The other advantage is that you don't need expensive (or alternately, crash-prone and map-poor) software installed.

By far the biggest and most popular database is hosted by wigle.net (Wireless Geographic Logging Engine). They have a variety of clients and can import data from any popular format.

On OS X, the .kismac service is fairly popular, though the database size is nowhere that of wigle. Its big advantage is native support inside Kismac.

Finally, many people are taking advantage of Google Earth to render their war drive. Google Earth has impressive maps, hardware acceleration, and a very powerful layering engine that makes the plug-in writers' job fairly easy. Google plug-ins are easy to write, and while the following list is a good start, it is by no means exhaustive. Be sure to see what other people are using.
